If I switch to an Apple due to Virus ?

Hello, My PC just became infected with this CTB-Locker virus. Old PC, and might just dump it. If I get an Apple PC, would it be able to read my (backed up to another external HD, thank goodness) my backed up WORD and Excel files ? I read about "Emulators". What do they do ? Do they work, etc. ?
