Copying files question

I was copying files from one folder to another and noticed that after holding down my ctrl key and selectively picking my jpg files to copy from one location to another, occasionally my Windows 7 computer would do some sort of internal copy that resulted in the images I had selected being copied into the same folder with a renamed version of the original that included 'copy'.
