Problem With Screen Suddenly Going Dark: Thoughts On ?

Hello, Always "something," I guess. Have a 3-1/2 yr old HP Desktop running W7. Everything works fine; always has, until yesterday. Now, after 5 or so hrs of use, the screen (suddenly) goes absolutely dark. The pilot light switch on the case is still illuminated.
