7 professional with no sleep?

i inherited a laptop from my wife, which in itself is great. its an older HP compaq, which someone (she bought it used) has installed Windows 7 professional on. anyway, she basicly used it for e-mail and face book. and not much else. i use it for a lot more things, and i am on and off it all day. the problem is there is no way to put this machine to sleep. i have to shut it down after every use,...
